Mens Fashion

One of the most recognizable styles from the 70's were disco and hippy. This was true for men and women. Other styles included bohemian, and glam rock. Many of these styles can still be seen today. The 70's is one of the most beloved decades for fashion.

The hippy style was created in the 60's but it was modified in the early 70's making it more exciting. For women some of these looks included colorful designs and many different textures and patterns. The design was casual and wearable but included more bold elements to make the look standout. One of the popular trends was tie dye, fringe, long flowing pants and skirts were all the rage, and bell bottoms.

Men's style in the early 70's was very similar to what it was in the late 60's. Clothes became very slim fitting and by 1973 it became normal to see a man in slim fitting bell bottoms and platform shoes. The clothes kept getting tighter and tighter as the years went on and the fabric of choice for the early 70's was polyester.

Fashion in the late 1970's was dominated by suits. People from all over the United States would wear pants suits, leisure suits, and track suits. In the 60's many people were not wearing pants, but the 70's everyone was. When women went to work they would wear pants or pant suits, and when they got home they would wear jeans.

Women's fashion in the 70's was revolutionary. It defied most gender roles, and women were finally free to wear what they wanted. Though gender roles stilled played a part, but compared to other decades they had a lot more freedom and expression.

The leisure suit became very popular in 1972. It became all the rage after John Travolta's smash hit, "Saturday Night Fever."

In the late 70's men's fashion included track suits which became very popular then. Sportswear was worn almost everywhere. Men's hair was much longer and chest hair was all the rage. Velour and terry cloth became the more popular fabric for men's shirts.
