Major Events

Disney Opens


-In 1971, in Orlando Florida, main street of Disney opens. 

-When it first opened the price of admission was $3.50, but a single day ticket now costs $105 for anyone who is over 10 years old.


Sears Tower Opens


-In 1973 the Sears tower in Chicago opens.

-At the time it was the tallest building in the world

Richard Nixon Resigns


-In 1974 Nixon resigns after his watergate scandal.

-Nixon's resignation was one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history. 

-In 1972, after a break-in at the Democratic National Committee's headquarters at the Watergate complex, 5 guys were arrested and the FBI was able to trace it back to Nixon and the White House.


The fall of Saigon


-In April 1975, the fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese marked the end of the Vietnam War. 

-The country became the socialist republic of Vietnam on July 2, 1976

Jimmy Carter becomes President
-In November of 1976, Jimmy Carter was elected the 39th president of the United States. 
-He defeated the incumbent Gerald Ford 
-While he was in office he created the department of  Engergy and Department of Education. 

Elvis Presley dies


-Elvis Presley died August 16, 1977 at the age of 42.

-He was still touring through out the 70's and his death was unexpected. 

U.S. Nuclear Accident

-On March 28, 1979 a nuclear accident took place in Pennsylvania when large amounts of reactor coolant and radioactive gases were released into the atmosphere. 

-Cleanup began in August 1979 and was not done until December of 1993.

Iran Hostages


-In November of 1979, 66 Americans were taken hostage after the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran was taken over by supporters of Iran's Islamic Revolution.

-All female and African American hostages were set free, but it wasn't unitl Ronald Reagan was sworn in-444 days later- were the other 52 set free.
